We’re onto our third bottle of wine and it’s only our third course. There’s still five more courses to go (that’s a smug realisation for the greedy among us), but we may need to slow down on the wine.

We’re at Uyen Luu’s Supper Club, celebrating a birthday meal. The whole notion of a supper club is a novel dining experience for all of us: dining with strangers all set in another stranger’s flat.

The welcome is warm as we enter Uyen’s dining room and she is extremely helpful when faced with many questions before booking. And take it from me, I am annoyingly indecisive. The space is cosy – we practically greet our fellow diners by climbing over them, however there’s a warm, friendliness in the air.

Pork-belly-ribs

We get through prawn and pork in a rice paper ‘summer’ roll, crispy pork belly on noodles, beef wrapped in betel leaf. They’re all fragrant – fresh coriander and mint enhance the savoury flavours and textures, perhaps a bit overwhelming for a few of my herb-phobic guests, but for me this is exactly how Asian cuisine should be.

In between a few more brief hellos to our neighbours, more of our wine, and a merry happy birthday rendition (and one red face), we’re treated to a chicken salad, vegetable curry roll and a prawn lollipop. That prawn lollipop was perhaps the most intriguing – prawn in batter covering a stick of sugar cane.

If we’re not full yet, we’re faced with our penultimate dish, a pho with pork. All of this is topped off with a blueberry ice cream and biscuit, refreshing after that savoury feast.

Supper Club | Uyen Luu’s Supper Club has a suggested donation of £35, plus tips for her helpers. This is very reasonable, considering there are eight courses. Uyen also caters for vegetarians and those with dietary requirements, which is hard to find in most restaurants.
