New Opening: Pitt Cue

Food  /

If you live, eat and breathe meat (particularly of the pork kind), then Pitt Cue‘s opening in Devonshire Square is for you, with a few great sides along the way.

What is it: Pitt Cue started as a street-food van a few years ago, set up its first restaurant in Soho and has now made the (bigger and better) move to Devonshire Square, just by Liverpool Street. With space for 80-100 seats, and a booking policy, we can (thankfully) make a journey without facing huge queues. Owner Tom Adams rears Mangalitza pigs – a hairy breed that’s been previously championed by the Hungarians and Austrians for taste and fat: it’s essentially the hero here, as indicated by the pig graphic above the entrance.

What to try: The menu offers various cuts from the Mangalitza. Try it cured, served with walnuts, or take a learning curve on meat cuts and try any cut that’s available on the menu, along with a few starters and sides.

Cured and Smoked Jowl

We tried the Potato Cake, the right kind of crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, along with the Cep and Black Garlic Sausage. Each mouthful resulted in a swoon over the flavour.

The Cured and Smoked Jowl (pig cheek), was tender with a rich (and thick) layer of fat. The balance of smoky flavour and texture is the epitome of the cliché, “Melt in the mouth”. There was no complaining about that fat.

If you’re a meat and two veg kinda person, there’s one side that ain’t to be missed – the Mushroom and Bone Marrow Mash was one we’ll be raving about for some time to come.

Save space for dessert. You will need to counteract those meat sweats with some seriously good sweetness. The Mousse & Pear, was both chocolate-y and nutty, with waves of smooth versus crunchy texture.

Where: Liverpool Street, East London. Situated in Devonish Square just by Liverpool Street, this is a spacious restaurant especially as, luckily for us, you can book for dinner.

Price range: Roughly £12-£22 for mains; £5 for sides which are easy to share between two; £5 for each dessert.

Best for: Meat-lovers.
