Shanes on Canalside is a seasonal restaurant of foraged goods and feel-good vibes – all flavour no frills.
What to Expect
The seasons may not play by the book, but Shanes on Canalside have got it covered. Enjoy seasonal dishes packed with flavour in this rotating menu of wild meats, line-caught fish and foraged produce. And when summer finally sets in, enjoy views of the canal and catch some well-deserved rays.
What to Eat
Choose from a selection of small and large plates. May saw us selecting a bowl of mussels in a soothing wild garlic and white wine sauce, and beetroot with a sprinkling of blue cheese, apple, crunchy walnuts, wild sorrel and watercress.
Vegetarians should look in on the fresh asparagus with roast squash, samphire and confit fennel. For us, steak was the name of the day – a grilled and sliced Bavette with delicious leaves, fries and a pot of béarnaise.
The nearby tables proved ripe for food envy, with a sumptuous fish dish to the left, and slow-cooked English lamb complete with parsnip purée and new potatoes to the right. Presentation and portion-size in equal measure.
What to Drink
Start with a cocktail and move on to the reasonably priced carafes of wine, we opted for a Ginger Nut with Abuelo Anejo rum, ginger bread syrup, lemon and egg white, followed by a steak-friendly Argentinian Malbec.
If you’re exploring Here East, the bars in Hackney Wick, or strolling along the canal this one’s for you.
There are offers aplenty, dive on 40% off wine on Wednesdays, £10 steak on Thursdays and Fish Friday with mussels, fries and glass of rosé for just £12, and much more. Check the website for details.
