Did you know it’s 2-4-1 cocktails at Latin American hotspot Las Iguanas all day, every day? Alongside this great deal, head of bar and beverage Luke Neale recommends trying a selection of tequila and mezcal solo for a truly authentic experience.

What to Expect

You’re not usually presented with a pestle and mortar when you order shots at a bar, but at Las Iguanas ask for a Salt Slate and you can mix your own accompaniment to your favoured tequila or mezcal. Think of it as a Mexican’s salted peanut. Simply grind down a bespoke mix of salt, chilli, goji berries and mint, throw it into your mouth and sip away. It’s mighty addictive.

The Salt Slate

What to Drink

Each month, Las Iguanas create four limited edition cocktails based on a mixture of social media requests and bartender know-how, so you’ll never get bored. New for June, the Brazilian Summer Punch was voted for by the public, a fabulous cachaça, raspberry and cava concoction. But don’t leave without sampling a good ol’ Classic Margarita made with the quality Olmeca Altos.

Cocktails aside, we recommend you veer a little off piste and ask the bartender to arrange a few tequila and mezcal tasters to try neat. Forget brutal ‘salt, shot, lime’ memories with cheap tequila, with Las Iquanas at the helm you’ll never look back, we promise.

The 100% agave Olmeca Altos resposado (literally ‘rested’ in an oak barrel for a few months) has a lovely, caramel texture, while the Montelobros mezcal from Oaxaca (pronounced wa-HAH-ka) adds a warm, smoky note to the occasion.

Top tasting tip: First, bring the tequila or mezcal glass to your nose slowly to appreciate the full flavour, no wine-glass style swirling necessary. Sip and enjoy.

The Halloumi Taco Plank is a tasty sharer

What to Eat

Go for the ‘Taco Planks’, we recommend the Havana Club and Jerk BBQ Pork with pink pickled onion, crispy onion and chilli, and the new Beetroot and Halloumi, with roquito peppers. Lovers of a fajita (or two) won’t leave hungry as there are a host of Mexican classics to choose from, too.

Best for…

With 2-4-1 cocktails all day, every day, Las Iguanas has got after-work drinks and weekends sorted. The party atmosphere takes you straight to Mexico, on a fraction of the budget.

Don’t Miss

Las Iguanas have proved they’re not all about tacos and tapas by winning the National Burger Awards this year, with their Buenos Aires Burger. Made from 100% prime short rib and chuck beef, the chargrilled patty is topped with aioli, baby gem lettuce, smoky pork chorizo, caramelised onion, Emmental cheese and fresh herb chimichurri. Why, you dark horse.
