Why not leave the pancake flippin’ to the professionals this Pancake Day? Here’s our pick of the best restaurants and bars serving up our flat-faced friends. Will you crêpe it or stack it?
1. Great British Flip Off
Book Club and Stories are hosting the Great British Flip Off as part of their all-day Pancake Day celebrations at the two east London venues. Turn up during the day, for a sneaky lunchtime challenge: see how many pancakes you can flip in a minute! There’s an optional £1 charity donation to enter and bar tab prizes for the winners.
If you’d rather eat not flip, both venues are serving a knock-out menu of pancakes. Take the deep fried Banoffee-inspired Pancakes (top) served with salted caramel rum sauce, fresh banana, whipped cream, and Nutella. Drool. Feeling spicy? You can try the savoury Mexican style Sweetcorn Pancakes with avocado, spicy jalapeño sauce, cheddar, refried beans, salsa, rocket and optional crispy bacon. There’s a gluten-free option too, made with buckwheat. And last but not least, the Beer and Bacon “Mancakes”. Click here to try the recipe at home.
The Book Club | Stories | 30-32 Broadway Market, London E8 4QJ | Tuesday 9 February | Pancakes will be served from 8am-10pm | No need to book, just click ‘attending’ on The Book Club or Stories Facebook events for the details.
2. “Magic Pancakes”
Foxlow, king of steak, cocktails and brunch, is giving all of the proceeds of its Magic Pancake Day to charity Magic Breakfast – helping run breakfast clubs in 450 UK schools (with a further 250 on their waiting list), providing nutritious breakfasts to those who need it. It costs 22p to give a child breakfast, and you can help provide this by eating your way through the lush menu.
Choose between Foxlow‘s take on the classic lemon and sugar; Montecristo (ham, cheese and maple syrup); and bourbon caramel with soft serve ice cream.
Serving at all Foxlow branches: Balham, Chiswick, Clerkenwell and Stoke Newington | 8am-5pm | Tuesday 9 February | Pancakes, juice and unlimited tea or coffee for £8 | Booking advised.
3. Pancake Day? Pancake Week!
The Magazine restaurant at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery knows how to celebrate, providing four days of pancake treats! For those with a sweet tooth, there’s a choice of blueberry compote, crème chantilly and brown butter crumble; or lemon curd, pomelo and macadamia.
Or indulge in the savoury maple glazed bacon, grilled tomato and montgomery cheddar or H. Forman and Son smoked salmon, avocado and crispy quinoa.
Can’t decide which to have? Simply come back the next day…
The Magazine restaurant at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery | West Carriage Drive, Kensington Gardens, London W2 2AR | From 9am, Tuesday 9 February ’til Friday 12 February
4. Pancakes and cocktails… the dream team
Shoreditch Cocktail & DJ Bar Shutterbug gives you the option to choose between traditional French crêpes or American-style pancakes on Pancake Day – all to the back drop of tunes from local record store LoveVinyl and cocktails galore…
Shutterbug’s sweet crêpes are made from the finest French patisserie flour. Dive in with a comforting Nutella and banana or homemade salted caramel and flaked almonds, or keep it simple with lemon and sugar. I know which I’d choose.
If none of the above tickle your fancy, stack it up with American-style pancakes drizzled with maple syrup, served with blueberries and smoked bacon.
Shutterbug | 1 Rivington Place, London EC2A 3BA | Tuesday 9 February | Tables will be on a first come first serve basis but you can grab a cocktail while you wait. Takeaway pancakes also available
