This new independent bar on Chiswick High Street oozes sophistication – a welcome addition to the vibrant pub scene in this leafy suburb and the fourth in Darwin & Wallace’s cohort of stylish bars.

What to Expect

No 197 Chiswick Fire Station is a stunning renovation of an iconic, historic gem – the design of which is the brainchild of architects and designers Lou Davies of Box 9 and Lionel Real De Azua of Red Deer.

Grab a stool and while away a few hours

The vast, open space spreads from the high street all the way out into the courtyard garden out the back (perfect for balmy summer days and nights) and every inch of the place has been individually designed to create a space that reflects the home. And a very swanky pad at that. From the carefully selected artwork in partnership with The Hang Up Gallery in Stoke Newington, to the striking central bar, squashy sofas, intimate booths and big party tables – this is one place you’ll want to call home.

The cocktails are a must; the pictures speak for themselves (our Rhubarb and Ginger Cobbler Tanqueray gin creations went down very nicely). The bar features spirit infusions, housemade syrups and sherbets including Lavender Rob Roy and Tanqueray 10 Gimlet as well as a range of local craft and international beers and lagers, plus a confident wine selection.

What to Eat

Sticky Beef Tacos

You can see right into the kitchen – the heart of any good home. We spotted a rotisserie, where pineapples were merrily turning above the chicken. You can enjoy a quarter, half or whole Rotisserie Chicken followed by Roast Pineapple with Agave syrup and passionfruit sorbet (pictured top).

There’s almost too much to choose from on the weekday and weekend menus, we recommend going for the small plates and sharers and trying as many dishes as possible. Try the dreamy Sticky Beef Soft Tacos with aioli and spring onion or dip into the delicate Crostini including Smoked Salmon, Dill and Horseradish Crème Fraiche; Fennel Salami, Chilli and Truffle Ricotta; and our favourite, the Spiced Crab and Mashed Avocado.

Don’t Miss

It’s time to brunch alfresco

All-day brunch is music to many a Londoner’s ears. And this place knocks it out of the park with the likes of Breakfast Sourdough Bruschetta with roast tomatoes, spinach, avocado, dry cured bacon and breakfast mayo; Blueberry Ricotta Pancakes; and classic Eggs Benedict and Eggs Royal with housemade hollandaise. And we’ve heard the breakfast menu is pretty damn good too.

Best for…

Lazy lunches, garden parties, and bumper get togethers (the giant tables give the game away).
