Fried chicken, hot wings, smoked chicken – we love it all. We took a visit to Absurd Bird to uncover the absurdness of it all and see whether it stuck out in London’s chicken scene. Forget your cheeky Nandos…
What is it
It’s chicken galore here with a range of comforting sides inspired by the heartiness and flavour of the Deep South. Absurd Bird puts an emphasis on slow farm rearing techniques – they know how the birds are treated, what they are fed and how long they are grown for. They have partnered with Fosse Meadows Farm and these birds are additive and hormone free. The chicken then gets the “absurd” treatment and is smoked on site. Find out more behind the scenes here.
What to try
Head straight for the Wing Shack on the menu – the smallest serving of four is enough as they’re huge. Our favourites were the smoked parmesan, garlic and lemon (delicious!) and buffalo (not the hottest we’ve had, but full on in flavour). Go large with the Bird dishes – try the Big Mama’s Favourite, Southern style smoked chicken – for soft and juicy textures.
The beauty in the menu here, is that the side dishes are just as important as your mains. Stick to the comfort-food journey with the Corn Bread Pudding or the Jalapeño Mac and Cheese.
We wanted the peanut butter cheesecake, but the Dipsy Cake intrigued us too much. Think oozing, buttery baked brioche balls with 3 dipping sauces – rich chocolate, caramel and brandy cream!
What to Drink
The cocktails. They’re a smooth start to any evening, look out for any using Absurd’s Moonshine or stick to local Signature Brewery’s beer.
Chicken lovers looking for a full-on comfort food experience with a story behind their sourcing. Take some friends and stick to Absurd Bird’s roots of family-style sharing plates to get a taste of a range of dishes.
We said it once, and we’ll say it again: The Dipsy Cake.
