Mr Bao‘s new opening in Peckham Rye is hot on the heels of the whirlwind of Asian bao steamed bun spots taking London by storm. Rye Lane is a blend of old meets new with takeaway shops and the bustling market next to new, hip coffee shops and restaurants popping up. Here’s what we thought…

What to try: Check out the daily specials and starters – the Golden Kimchi was a hit on flavour, and nobody could keep their hands off the Fried Chicken on the table.

The bao selection is short and sweet. Choose from Mr Bao – slow-braised Flock + Herd pork, pickles and peanut powder; Bao Diddley – pulled free-range chicken, kimchi and wasabi mayo; Shiitake Mushroom – with Teriyaki and miso mayo; Slow Cooked Lamb – with pickled red onion and mint; and Prawn – with pickled red cabbage and guacamole.

The Mr Bao is a great mix of textures, while the pairing with mint sauce on the Slow Cooked Lamb makes for an interesting bao we’ve not seen before.

Head over on weekends for Asian twists on brunch – we’ve got our eye on trying the The Full Taiwanese next, with Taiwanese sausage and bao.

What to drink: The use of Asian ingredients continues on the cocktail menu, but we say head straight for that sake list. The Umeshu Plum Wine (£4) is rich and sweet; while the Sparkling Mio (£12); and the dry and delicate Kubota Senju (£17) are perfect for sharing between two.

Don’t miss: The Bao S’More – fried bao, melted chocolate and toasted marshmallow. This is comfort food for those with a sweet tooth.

Best for: Asian food lovers. Mr Bao serves up Taiwanese Gua Bao (the buns), however guests can taste flavours and ingredients from other South East Asian countries dotted throughout the menu, as well as a few British twists. Whether or not you have a favourite bao spot in London, this is great for dining on a budget, or sharing an indulgent feast. 

Frank and I have travelled the world eating at the best restaurants and street-food vendors we could find. The very best food experiences make us truly happy. So, together with our Taiwanese executive chef, John Huang, we put together a menu that makes us truly happy when we eat it. Then we held pop-up nights in Peckham and got feedback from all of our local friends. This resulted in the beautiful menu we have, featuring homemade kimchi + teriyaki and fresh wasabi!” Co-founders Frank Yeung and Nick Birkett.

Where: While Peckham may be a stretch for some, this is a great spot for South East London’s locals.
