Local Eats: MAMIE’S

Food  /

Love the taste of France? Check out MAMIE’S Breton crêperie in Covent Garden. Here’s our low-down…

What to Expect

MAMIE’S keep it simple and authentic, from the menu to the cider served in bolées. But the décor, over three very different floors, is more modern. Aymeric Peurois opened MAMIE’S with the intention of sharing a traditional Breton crêperie experience with Londoners. The concept was inspired by his early memories of afternoon crêpes and family meals consisting of galettes baked by ‘Mamie’, his grandmother.

What to Eat

It’s simple: go for a galette if you’re in the mood for savoury and a crêpe if you’re after something sweet. The crispy galettes are made from buckwheat flour – perfect if you’re looking for a gluten-free option.

There are no rules here, Aymeric encourages us to start savoury, then have a sweet crêpe, and then maybe have another galette! Go for the Complète – egg, ham and Emmental – for a traditional combination, or the pimped up Forest Complète – all of the above with mushrooms and onions for added flavour.

If it’s a case of the cheesier the better, La Rabelais, with goat’s cheese, Emmental, Camembert and Bleu d’Auvergne, is for you! You can also add additional ingredients to your selection, so don’t be afraid to experiment. When it comes to the sweet choices, you can’t go wrong with Banana and Nutella, or who can resist a Crêpe Flambée?

What to Drink

Keep it traditional, as they do in Brittany, with a bolée – a small bowl of cider. There are a few different options from both France and Britain, but don’t be afraid to ask for a recommendation to suit your taste, or go for a bottle if you’re sharing. There are also wine and beer options on the menu.
