At times like this, it’s best to focus on the good things that America has to offer, and when the next (and biggest) of the Jackson + Rye collection opened in the heart of the City we were all smiles.
What to Expect
Jackson + Rye offers homecooked East Coast American food in a relaxing environment (no cheesy American paraphernalia here). From fresh fish and seafood pasta, to huge steaks and juicy ribs, the variety and reliability of the menu gives it an addictive quality.
Apart from the Soho location, Jackson + Rye has so far been situated on the outskirts of the bustling centre, with popular restaurants in Richmond, Chiswick and Kingston; the new destination in Bank is a welcome addition for city-dwellers and those in need of a breakfast or lunch in between shifts.
What to Eat
The menu caters for fish-lovers and meat-lovers alike. For a fresh starter, try the Tuna Tartare with yellowfin tuna, chipotle, cucumber, lime, spring onion and sourdough toast, or the delicious Blue Swimmer Crab Cakes (pictured above) with a tasty side of chilli and radish slaw, plus chipotle sauce. A special mention goes to the comforting Crunchy Chorizo Prawns with a mango chilli mayo (pictured below).
Moving on, it’s all about the BBQ. We opted for the Smoky Rye-Glazed Pork Ribs, a full rack of ribs with a special rye glaze (and more on the side for those who like to play with their food), as well as green slaw (for a spot of respite) and fries.
But if you’re feeling fishy, the Shrimp Burger is top comfort food with ever-popular avocado in the form of Mexican guacamole, plus tomato, chilli, leaves, chipotle mayo and fries, served in a sweet glazed brioche bun. And the Cajun Grilled Swordfish came highly recommended, comprising a more traditional set-up of new potatoes, baby kale and green beans, with an egg, caper and herb dressing.
What to Drink
It’s in the name. American rye whiskies are heralded as being the gateway to whiskey drinking, as such Jackson + Rye can’t get enough of the stuff. Make sure to ask for the rye menu, as well as checking out the rye glazes (THOSE ribs), and don’t overlook the rye and butterscotch sauce on the Sticky Toffee Pudding (pictured below). But I digress…
A simple way to get on board with the whiskey drinking is to dive headfirst into a Rye Manhattan – a short and smooth cocktail with Rittenhouse Rye, Luxardo Maraschino, and Martini Rosso, to add that sweet edge. For hardcore whiskey drinkers, try a rye on the rocks from the extensive selection.
And when you thought it was all over, the Oreo & Rye Thick Shake reveals itself, complete with Oreo cookies, rye whiskey and banana. Now that’s dedication.
Low-lights and cosy booths sit alongside American tunes and a fun vibe at this central location, designed with care by interior designers CantorMasters. Take clients here for lunch, save it for a date night or book a table for a group of friends. It really does have it all.
This place knows how to do a good starter, not to mention a mouthwatering side. Don’t let the meat outshine a good old-fashioned salad – a Gem Lettuce with ranch dressing, bacon crumb and blue cheese went down very nicely. Or bump up the size of the menu’s four starter salads to make it a main meal, including a Crispy Duck and a Health Nut with chargrilled chicken breast.
But a special mention must go to both the Buffalo Chicken Wings – which come with the BBQ, peri peri and blue cheese homemade sauces – and the ever-popular Truffled Mac and Cheese.
