Head to Company Below’s great speakeasy bar below Balls & Company in Soho for a quick bite and cocktails…
What to Expect
This botanical drinking den serves up herbal cocktails and deep-fried bao (yes, you heard us!), alongside great sharing snacks. Simply get to Balls & Company, which you must try for their meatballs and sides, and head downstairs. Behind the canopy of plants and in the cool, cosy setting, the cocktail list uses house-infused spirits, liqueurs and natural ingredients.
What to Eat
Well, don’t miss the deep-fried bao here. We asked the team at Company Below why they chose to offer this twist on their menu and the answer is simple – they wanted to try something different… and it definitely works! The Shortrib Beef Bao with pickles and salted chilli mayo was so tender and tasty, and we had no issues with the deep-fried texture, which oozes flavour. There’s also a tofu version for vegetarians.
While Balls & Company upstairs do meatballs and a selection of sides, you’ll find a few of their snacks on Company Below’s menu too, including churros and arancini. Our favourite snack had to be the Parmesan Churros with labneh and honey (so damn good!), but these change quite regularly, so you’re in for a treat. We loved the moreish Squid Ink Arancini with aioli and chorizo crumb, and there’s also Polenta Chips for a fancy upgrade.
What to Drink
You could spend ages looking over the cocktail menu full of intriguing ingredients, including fir tree liqueur, walnut butter, and thyme liqueur, to name a few. Our favourite, if you like something on the sweet side, was the Prime Target, with gin, apricot eau-de-vie, coconut water and bitters; or if you prefer something that packs more of a punch, go for the Smoke Without Fire – mezcal, aloe vera, lime, chipotle, rhubarb and strawberry soda.
It’s all about THAT Deep-fried Dessert Bao filled with brown butter pecan ice cream, chocolate and praline. Think both crunch and ooze in one bite, in a dessert that had us regretting not ordering one each!
In need of a quick drink and bite, while escaping the heavily packed pubs of Soho? Then this is your perfect hideaway spot, whether it’s for a date, catch up with a friend, or evening tipple with a work mate. Or have a bite while you wait for a table at Balls & Company above.
