Spring is on the way but that doesn’t mean we’re done with warming comfort food. And we don’t mean just any comfort food. Fowl Mouths Japanese residency at Clapham’s The King & Co has been extended throughout March ’til the end of Easter (lucky for us).

Fowl Mouths: Who are they?

Having eaten her way around Japan and launched a supper club in 2014, head chef Melissa Thompson has taken on the heartier side of Japanese food. Think “made with love, eaten with joy”, there is a commitment to delivering full-on taste and flavour in each dish, as well as sourcing meat that is rare-breed and free-range supplied by The Butcher’s Block, as well as British-grown wasabi.

“I’ve been blown away by the customers’ response to our food at The King & Co. It’s been busier than I could have ever hoped for and I’ve had great fun serving our Japanese comfort food and creating daily specials. Now we’re staying in the pub’s kitchen until the end of March we’ll have even more time to try out new dishes, and I look forward to feeding even more people,” says Fowl Mouths’ founder and head chef Melissa Thompson

What to try

It’s Japanese flavours meets the best of British and American comfort food here. Feast on a daily menu of snacks, mains and desserts including a few special treats for March: Panko-crusted Potato KorokkeTeriyaki Chilli Wings and eight-hour braised miso short rib hirata buns. Don’t miss the twice-fried Kara-age Chicken with wasabi coleslaw for a twist on fried chicken. Then there’s the Ponzu Steak marinated in citrus-seasoned soy sauce and garlic. (Yum)

Breakfast and brunch fans can get a taste of Fowl Mouths’ twist on traditional favourites: have you tried a Pork Belly Benedict with poached eggs and yuzu hollandaise? Or there’s the Egg and “Bacon” Bun with Tonkatsu “brown” sauce. And all that best accompanied by The King & Co’s bottomless boozy brunch Bloody Marys, cava and selected craft beers.  

And don’t forget to end your meal with the melt in your mouth Chocolate Sesame Balls. 

Japanese Food and Beer Matching Event

If you’re a beer lover why not book The King & Co‘s Japanese Food and Beer Matching Event on Tuesday 15 March. Guests will be treated to a five-course Japanese tasting menu with a tutored beer tasting by House of Boda. Early bird tickets are available for £30 until 6 March (£35 thereafter).

Fowl Mouths‘ residency is the latest in The King & Co’s collaborations with London’s best street-food traders including The Cheese Truck, Vinn Goute, Miss P’s Barbecue, and Donostia Social Club.
